The Food Ministry of our church was started by Voncile Senterfitt in 1997 when she was the Church Secretary. People in need were able to pick up donated food items from Voncile in the church office. By the end of the year, there were too many people coming by the office seeking food assistance. Through Ms. Senterfitt’s leadership, an official Food Ministry Program (as a mission of First Baptist Church of Live Oak) was started with church volunteers. The church joined the Food Bank of Suwannee County which is now called “Gateway Food Bank of Lake City”. Additionally, First Baptist became a provider agency to provide free distribution of U.S.D.A. food commodities. The church established a designated fund for donations so food could be purchased for this ministry. Years later, the church established an annual budget to further support the financial needs of this growing ministry. Originally, the second Friday of each month was the day set aside for volunteers to distribute food to those in need. In 2006, the ministry expanded to the second and fourth Friday’s of each month. Since then, the Food Ministry provides food to an average of 285 clients. During March 2014, in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the program, First Baptist Church Food Ministry partnered with LOVE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST (LOVE, INC). The role of this agency is to screen clients for their financial eligibility. LOVE, INC also assists us in securing food donations for the ministry.
